My reaction to this cartoon was thinking that I mostly like Chick Flicks.. as long as English period pieces like "Sense and Sensibility" are not included in the mix.
I am not a big fan of the PBS/BBC Masterpiece Theater stuff.. but I do occasionally watch because Ann loves the stuff. I do like romantic comedies though and some days even prefer them to action flicks.. relax.. it is not a regular occurrence.
What is your definition of a "Chick Flick"?
Well, I'm a chick, so anything I watch is a "Chick Flick." ;)
ReplyDeleteI don't have a definition for your, but I love a good romantic comedy. Sometimes you need to just sit back, relax and laugh....I like action thrillers, but they wear me out....I'm on the edge of my seat the whole time and when it's over I'm exhausted.
ReplyDeleteA romance that overcomes initial complications and contains tenderness and comedy.
ReplyDeleteI love "While You Were Sleeping" and "Return to Me" and all the Meg Ryan Chick Flicks.
A movie a girl would gladly see with either her best girlfriends or her significant other, but a movie a guy would ONLY go see with his significant other and NOT go see with his best buddies.
ReplyDelete@Missy - Have you seen "The Rock" or "Die Hard"? Just want to be able to tell my wife that somebody thinks that they are chick flicks :)
ReplyDelete@Wanda - Ann has similar reactions to suspenseful type of movies.
@Don - I like Meg Ryan movies too.
@Stephanie - Love that definition! I think that the ONLY and NOT of the second part says it all.
Bob, I loved ALL the Die Hard movies. And a bonus: The Rock is one of my favorites! To be honest, there are very few movies I don't like. Those would be extremely gorey movies (some is ok), overly predictable movies (which are often the traditional chick flicks) and Atonement. Hope that helps!
ReplyDeleteThanks Missy! Still trying to get my brain wrapped around the idea that Die Hard is a chick flick :)
ReplyDeleteI think one way to define chick flicks is that I want to wear the clothes the female lead is wearing.
ReplyDeleteBut I also think Godfather I and II are chick flicks because they tell a sweeping story, with family firmly rooted at the base of it. Not action, or victory, but family, and what it is and isn't, how you can lose it, what secrets it protects and what it can't protect.
@Therese - The Godfather as a chick flick? I am thinking I like these new definitions but I am thinking that some of the fraternity house movies might not qualify?
ReplyDeleteYou're darn right about the toga movies. Also, gore chain-saw flicks (I don't think anybody should see those, actually). "There's Something About Mary" and "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" neither of which I saw but heard enough about to understand are good examples of non-chick flicks.
ReplyDeleteI have a certain sympathy for men who don't want to see Meg Ryan in anything, where I can watch her, in her younger cuter days, pretty much over and over. I wouldn't ask any man to see one of those movies on a date any more than I would ask a man to watch me shop for underwear - it's just not appropriate, call me old-fashioned.
But I don't mind a good war movie, provided that there are relationships in it, and accurate history. My brain works as well as my tear ducts!
Agree about many war movies. Some gals have told me that they really liked Braveheart and Gladiator.
