A rare copy of the first comic book featuring Superman sold Monday for $1 million, smashing the previous record price for a comic book.
A 1938 edition of Action Comics No. 1, widely considered the Holy Grail of comic books, was sold from a private seller to a private buyer, neither of whom released their names. The issue features Superman lifting a car on its cover and originally cost 10 cents.
Reminds me that some people have more money than sense. Have you ever spent a large sum of money on something absolutely frivolous? A few things come to mind: vinyl covered steel siding that I had installed in 1973 that cost 20% of what I paid for the house; a 1979 VW Rabbit that used a quart of oil a week - I just had to have that car!
How about you? Ever paid way too much for something and regretted it later?
Purchased a small fishing boat. Best two days of my life; the day I bought it and the day I sold it.
ReplyDeleteGosh, Bob, maybe you should ask if there's anyone who has NOT paid too much for something and regretted it later! Because I think most everybody has done that! I know I have!
ReplyDeleteBut $1 M for a comic book?
Wow.
A 10,000 Hawaiian Time Share that has been nothing but a nightmare and has maintenance fees I am legally bound to for life to and my descendants that are presently 1400. And when I go to trade it, nothing is ever available. Sheesh! By the way, You sight is now on my blog recommend list.

A laser disc player that went obsolete the next week with DVD players.
ReplyDeleteMainly exercise equipment.
ReplyDelete@anon - lol.. that was funny.
ReplyDelete@Sue - maybe it is just an issue of how much :)
@Don - yikes.. no paradise there? I added you to my blogroll too.
@jrc - got a HD-DVD too?
@Mike - That and gym memberships for me.
Why are gold, silver and diamonds more valuable than copper, tin and opals? Makes as much sense as a $1M comic book to me.
ReplyDeleteNot sure they are Ed.. but feel free to send me your gold coins and I will send you my copper pennies :)
ReplyDeleteSomething is only worth what someone will pay for it. If alchemists could suddenly turn anything into gold it would be worthless.
ReplyDeleteI started watching and old Star Trek The Next Generation episode last night, it was called The Most Toys and it was about a collector who prized one of a kind artifacts. He had the only remaining Roger Maris baseball card in his collection.
I also recently heard of a video game that nobody likes to play, but because it's rare goes for thousands of dollars. Here's the monumental Feb 13th Purchase for $10k: Nintendo nes Stadium Events game (Nintendo, 1987)
The Wikipedia entry about it: Stadium Events
@Mike - that reminded me of a Twilight Zone episode where thieves robbed a truckload of gold bars and entered some time machines that woke them up 100 years in the future when gold was worthless.
ReplyDeleteGuess I agree that something is only worth what someone will pay for it.. of course the best things in life are free and "priceless".
True!
ReplyDeleteI am seriously trying to think of something because I know I have done this...but I've never had that much money to spend frivolously! LOL! I have paid obscene amounts for good concert tickets, but don't regret that for a second. :)
ReplyDeleteIf I think of something, I'll come back.
This just in -

The Dallas-based auction house said the rare copy of Detective Comics No. 27 sold for a total of $1,075,500, which includes the buyer's premium, to a buyer who wished to remain anonymous. The consigner wanted to remain anonymous as well."
