The state Assembly passed a resolution Thursday calling for a statewide "Cuss Free Week," to occur annually during the first week of March. It next goes to the state Senate for a final vote on Monday.I love this! Yeah it may seem to be a piece of unenforceable fluff legislation to some but I think that it may send a message to the folks in California.. and it just may help create a level of civility.. even if it is on a small level.
The rest of next week will be officially swear-word free if both houses approve the resolution.
The resolution by Assemblyman Anthony Portantino, D-La Canada Flintridge, was inspired by a South Pasadena teenager, McKay Hatch, who founded a No Cussing Club at his junior high school in 2007. His efforts to stamp out profanity have generated international attention, with 35,000 members joining the No Cussing Club's Web site.
If you are interested in how much cussing you do on your blog you may want to visit the Cuss-O-Meter page.. the KansasBob.com results are pictured above.
What do you think? Will you join in next week? Not that you cuss all that much
0% of my blog contains cussing. :) To me, cussing is one of those things that depend on the situation. I don't cuss in front of my students or the teams that I coach, and I definitely believe there is way too much foul language out there. On the other hand, a well placed cuss word can be a good way to emphasize a point. Especially if it's from someone who usually doesn't cuss.
ReplyDeleteFound this link to the No Cussing Club.. they also have a Facebook fan page.. so great what a young man can do!
ReplyDelete@Heir - I definitely agree with you that there is way too much foul language out there.. movies seem to be rife with it.
ReplyDeleteWe grew up never being allowed to use bad language. As a result, I really never use it. I think "dang" has come out a few times. My mom would tell us to say "Sugar" if we wanted to say something bad.
ReplyDeleteGreat Post.
I seldom cuss in print, but I do verbally, depending on who is around. I do substitute words sometimes, Volkswagen's "Fahrvergnügen" is a fun one. :-)
ReplyDeleteBob, I'm a little disappointed in your score on this, I got 0% on my main blog.
ReplyDeleteBut then I did it on my music blog and got 17.4% WTF! I was shocked!
Seriously, I would love the challenge of not cussing for a week (especially for my son!). Do you think Californians have more cussing than other states???
I cannot imagine California beating New York City Barbara.. but I am not sure about NY State? But maybe it is more widespread than we think.. maybe California can lead the way to a national cuss free week?
