Mary Travers, of Peter, Paul & Mary fame, died yesterday at 72 in Danbury, Connecticut after a long battle with leukemia. She joined forces with Peter Yarrow and Noel Paul Stookey in the early 1960s. They had some great songs like "If I Had a Hammer", "Lemon Tree" and "Puff (The Magic Dragon.)"
I will always remember her when I hear "Leaving on a Jet Plane".. it was one of my favorites growing up in the 60s. May God comfort Mary's friends and family during this time of mourning.
I was raised on PP&M. Their redition of How Many Roads changed my relationship to music. She may be the first person from my youth to impact me as dying in old age.
ReplyDeleteNot much longer until we find peace with Him.
An iconic group for us older folks who can remember them. I loved their version of Blowing in the Wind.
ReplyDeleteI love "Blowing in the Wind" too Barbara.
ReplyDeleteAnother one I remembered this week was "Where Have All The Flowers Gone?".. reminded me of those turbulent 60s.. thank God there were folks who spoke out against the war in Vietnam.
I didn't realize that she died in the town I live in.
