Christian Unity

In a recent Christian Broadcasting Network news article titled "Will the Church Grow Under Pres. Obama?" Rebecca Hagelin of the Heritage Foundation is quoted saying:
"Nothing unites Christian conservatives more than a common enemy, and here the enemy is a radical liberal agenda," she said.
Really? Is this what unites us? Is politics the new tie that binds?

Hagelin's words are symptomatic of what divides us - not what unites us. Here is what the apostle writes on the subject:

When one of you says, "I'm on Paul's side," and another says, "I'm for Apollos," aren't you being totally infantile? ... Remember, there is only one foundation, the one already laid: Jesus Christ.(1 Corinthians 3:4,11 MSG)
Christians are not united by a common political enemy.. we are united by Christ.. His love for us, our love for Him and our love for each other.

  1. You are exactly correct. The only problem with Christians today is that it is their belief in Christ itself that causes the most division.

  2. i guess no matter which side of the aisle you are on, it's important to remember that there's only one aisle -- and we are called to that walkway. great post, thanks!

  3. I find it interesting that even though Nero was on a rampage to kill every Christian who has ever existed, the New Testament does not even mention his name. Yeah, the "common enemy."

Shudder to think what the Bible would have looked like if James Dobson was tasked to write it.

  4. Nero? How did he get in here? He didn't "take office" or however they would put it until 54 AD, which is close to the end of the time of the writing of the documents that eventually made up the New Testament.

Acts is the last historical recording in the Bible. What is collected after that are letters of instruction and preaching, and recording of revelations.

(I didn't know Nero's timing, but the comment made me look him up, because I know he had a good crowd of Christians available to torture, so there had to be a little lead time in there.
