11/12/08 Update: $1.63/gallon in KC.. $1.79 close to me.. half of what it was in May

10/28/08 Update: Gas dipped under $2/gallon this week.. still scratching my head.

5/11/08 Update: Gas today was $3.57 - cost $64 to fill-up bigfoot.

4/23/08: The price board of a Chevron gas station is shown in San Francisco on Monday. Rising gasoline prices tightened the squeeze on drivers jumping to an average $3.50 a gallon at stations across the country. It is $3.41 in KC.

How much is a gallon of gas in your neck of the woods?

  1. Depending on the area of D.C., it ranges from $3.45 right near our house to almost $3.60 in Georgetown. Funny that 20 years ago, I could get a gallon of gas for 89 cents. The good old days...

  2. $3.53 is the cheapest you will find in my neck of the woods but that number will jump up to $3.57 by Monday afternoon I predict...I read earlier today that recent widespread investment speculation is currently driving up the price. I don't know if that is true or not...but...all we need now is for investment speculator's to ruin the energy industry like they have the housing market...

  3. I left for work one day last week. It was $3.37. By the time I was heading home, it was $3.51.

  4. Ouch! On the way home I saw 3.39 was the lowest here in So. New Hampshire. It's helpful that my local grocery store has been doing a promo for .30 off per gallon. I hate to see what happens if we start off the summer season this high. Fewer summer road trips. :(

  5. $4.85 a gallon here in Kawasaki. They reduced the national gas tax last week. Before that it was around $5.60 a gallon.

  7. Thanks Casey - I guess it takes someone in Japan to give us all an economics reality check :(

  9. Wow! After reading these comments, our low $3.40's don't sound so bad.

  10. Almost 3.50 and gas was under a dollar eight years ago if memory serves.

  11. About 3.42. My last dream before I awoke this morning was being surprised when I pulled into the gas station at Walmart (the cheapest one in our area) to see it was 3.24. I remember wondering in my dream if maybe I'd just imagined that it was a .42 and not a .24 that I'd been seeing. But then I woke up and found that indeed, the lower number was my imagination...

  15. Our's peaked about $4 and is now down close to $2. I'm scratching my head too, Bob. (As I pump my van as full as I can!)

  16. Gas for less than $2.00/gallon restores my faith that there is still some real supply and demand forces in our gas prices. It seems like it rockets up at any rumor of a disruption and falls ever so slowly once supplies are back to normal.

Unfortunately, gas at $2.00 a gallon is not good news, IMO. It'll practically kill any alternative energy exploration. Why look for alternative fuels when they cost so much more than gasoline? Also, it's a sign of just how weak the global economy is. Gas is cheap because manufacturers don't need it right now with the global economy at a virtual stand still. The good news is those countries that "don't like us very much" are going to see serious crimps in their budgets as they've come to rely on much higher oil prices. Iran'll have problems making as much trouble with their income slashed in half. The other good news is some budget relief for the middle class of our country.

I just hope that this time around, we don't forget and put our heads back in the sand. It's time to get off the oil addiction whether gas is $2.00 a gallon or $5.00.

  17. Driving by the Chevron station today (10-28)the sign said $2.65 a gallon. Every day this last week it has gone down about a nickle a day.
Going to fill up tomorrow...hope it will be the same or less.

  18. Thanks all for the comments.. ditto Brian's sentiments about putting our heads in the sand.

  19. I paid $1.97 the other day, but it is down to $1.95 in Des Moines as well. It looks like it might drop further. I never thought I would see it this low again.

  20. Today the Today Show highlighted a place in KC that is advertising $1.89/gallon. Good time to take a Road Trip!

  21. Wow! I asked this same question but most of my comments came in at lower than what I pay (2.21). Interesting how if varies over the states.

I'm trying to catch up on your blog, I am way behind on all my blog reading!

  22. In CT regular is about $2.69. Next door, NY is the same. In NJ the price is only $2.39. However, in NJ where the gas is always significantly cheaper you cannot pump your own gas. I guess state taxes make the difference.

  23. State taxes do make a difference Joe. I live close to Missouri and buy gas there where it is about 10 cents a gallon cheaper than in Kansas.. guess I should label this Kansas City Gas :)
